The Near-perfect RBG Comp
by Archive // August 1, 2014Article by Bigmoran
One of the questions I’m most frequently asked both in the comment section of the videos and on the forums is what comp is best for Rated Battlegrounds. Obviously there are some classes and specs that work better on specific maps, but when you queue for RBGs, you aren’t guaranteed to get the ideal map for your composition. That isn’t something you should worry about, though, there are definitely comps that work well on every map. In this article I will explain what classes and specs you should aim to have in your RBG group.
TANKSGuardian/Feral Druid: Out of all the tank specializations in game, Guardian Druids are the most powerful for RBGs. They have a lot of mobility, making them great on capture the flag maps. On top of that, they have the ability to stealth, allowing them to slip past the enemies’ defenses and secure a flag pick-up.
Moreover, Druids can spec Feral for node-defending maps. With immunities to polymorph, high DPS, great defensive CDs, and an additional CC break with Symbiosis Divine Shield from Paladins, Feral Druids are excellent at defending bases. Lastly, both Guardian and Feral can benefit from undefined, which allows them to prevent node captures from range.
DPS
Subtlety Rogue: Rogues provide your team with a lot of offensive power. They provide your DPS with a 10% damage increase from Prey on the Weak, as well as a 15% damage increase to one DPS through Tricks of the Trade. They are almost necessary to score kills on enemy flag carriers, thanks to their stunlocks and Smoke Bomb. On node capture maps, they are excellent ninjas and can capture enemy bases by either chaining crowd control or killing the enemy base defender.
Frost Mage: Mages are one of the backbones of any RBG comp. They are great base defenders and can survive by themselves against multiple enemies by using their Ice Block, Alter Time, and PvP Trinket. In team fights, Mages can CC multiple healers at once and provide high burst damage with Frozen Orb and Ice Lance.
Affliction/Destruction Warlocks: Warlocks, much like mages, provide your team with a spammable 8-second CC: Fear. This makes them great on both offense and defense by allowing them to either peel enemy DPS or control enemy healers to score kills.
Affliction Warlocks do massive AoE damage, which works well on team fight maps such as Battle for Gilneas and Arathi Basin. What’s more, Affliction Warlocks provide dispel protection in the form of Unstable Affliction, which helps the other DoT classes in the group pump out massive AoE pressure.
Destruction Warlocks are one of the most frightening classes to face in RBGs. They provide huge burst damage with their Dark Soul Chaos Bolt. Additionally, Destruction Warlocks can spam Rain of Fire, which will prevent enemy players from capturing nodes.
Shadow Priest: Shadow Priests are one of the most underused classes in RBGs. They pair nicely with Frost Mages and provide your team with high burst damage as well as CC for enemy healers. On team fight maps, Shadow Priests and Mages can coordinate CC on enemy healers to help secure kills on the enemy team.
Balance Druid: Balance Druids are one of the most dangerous classes in RBGs. On team fight maps they are able to do massive burst damage through undefined and Nature’s Vigil. I have seen Starsurge Crits doing upwards of 300k damage with Berserking. Moreover, they are excellent ninja classes on node maps. With their ability to stealth, self heal, and do massive damage and CC, they are well equipped to kill base defenders before the enemy team has a chance to react.
Unholy/Frost Death Knight: Death Knights are the best non-rogue melee class to have in your RBG. Their main utility comes from their Death Grip ability, which can be used to set up kills on enemy players. Moreover, Death Knights are well equipped to prevent enemy node captures by spamming their undefined ability.
HEALERSMistweaver Monk: Monks provide your team with instant, spammable burst heals via Detonate Chi. On top of that, MW Monks can AoE heal your entire team with Revival, which clears all friendly targets of debuffs and provides a burst heal to everyone in range. Additionally, Monks provide your team with Ring of Peace, which works well on enemy teams who are clumped together.
Holy Paladin: Holy Paladins, much like MW Monks, provide your team with huge burst heals. With their casted and instant healing abilities, they can heal through enemy pressure on your flag carrier. They also bring Aura Mastery to your team, which allows your entire raid to freecast without worrying about being interrupted for a short time.
Holy Priest: Holy Priests provide your team with massive burst healing and great defensive cooldowns. Guardian Spirit can be used on flag carriers to prevent death, even in the face of massive pressure from the enemy team. Additionally, Holy Priests can undefined flag carriers when they are nearly dead. Lastly, Holy Priests are the only healer that can top the raid while they are dead. Upon dying, the priest turns into a Spirit of Redemption, a form in which they can use many of their healing abilities temporarily before dying.
The classes and specs I listed above are what I would consider the ideal RBG composition. There are variants to this comp, but if you have the ability to consistently run with the above comp, I would definitely recommend it.

InactiveThose that show up 😀
Choosing based on class is not always the best option though, but I’m well aware of the bonuses that some classes bring more to the table than others.
(Only slightly hurt that Shamans isn’t represented in that list)

InactiveWell I will chime in on my own thread…
😉
Before we begin I do want to state unequivocally that I fully believe quality leadership and good people is by far the most important thing. That said when two teams of good people led well meet… then class can be a deciding factor. As such if given a preference I would opt for more ideal classes than not.
Now my ideal RBG team is not an exact match to skill caps, still there is much overlap and here is what I really think is “required”…
Holy Priest- Great heals
Rogue- stealth and burst
Lock- There is a reason the above “ideal” team has 3…
DK- TCing and AoE
Balance Druid- VersatilityAfter this… there is flexibility imo. I would suggest two more healers from monk, pally, and druid as well as more RDPS. But again this is just theory crafting come out and play RBGs with us and most importantly… we will have some fun :).

The Near Perfect RBG Composition, Updated For WoD
I have had a lot of requests to update my MoP guide on the best RBG comp. Although it is pretty early in the expansion, there are a few classes that are excelling in RBGs. Though the metagame might change, here are the best classes for RBGs in Season 16.
THE CORE
Balance Druids: Balance Druids are the new Affliction Warlocks. Their AoE damage and spread pressure is incredibly powerful at the moment. Starfall paired with Moonfire andSunfire are enough to rot the health pools of enemy players and OOM (out of mana) enemy healers. The up time on Starfall is close to 100% in team fights, with Entangling Rootsgranting a charge of Starfall every fifteen seconds. Moreover, Starsurge is an instant cast, making it really powerful for killing enemy flag carriers once they reach high stacks of Focused Assault. Balance Druids will easily top the damage meters of RBGs whilst providing extra utility with crowd control and off-healing.
Frost Death Knights: Frost Death Knights pump out huge burst damage and are very difficult to kill. The role of Frost DK’s hasn’t changed much since the last expansion. Using Death Gripto pull enemy players into vulnerable positions is one of the most powerful tools in RBGs and is what separates DK’s from their plate wearing counterparts.
Combat/Subtlety Rogues: In my opinion, Rogues will always be the backbone of an RBG composition. They provide lots of control over the enemy team and keep base defenders paranoid about ninja attempts. Combat seems to be one of the most popular specializations right now in PvP. You have the option of increasing the duration of your Kidney Shot from 6 seconds to 8 seconds by using Revealing Strike, as well as high sustained damage. Putting an enemy FC into an 8 second Kidney Shot is quite terrifying to the enemy team. Subtlety still has its place, however. Shadow Dance is still a very powerful offensive tool, keeping kill targets locked down during kill attempts.
Guardian Druids: Despite all the rage over Rogue FC’s with Burst of Speed, Guardian Druids are still the best flag carriers in the game. Their high armor and strong defensive cool downs, such as Survival Instincts, provide the perfect answer to enemy damage. Moreover, having stealth and the best mobility in the game is extremely good at getting the enemy flag safely across the field.
Discipline Priests: Discipline Priests, or Disc Priests, are some of the strongest healers at the moment. Shield absorbs are very effective at mitigating enemy damage. Penance being castable on the move with Glyph of Penance makes Disc Priests incredibly mobile healers. Lastly, Pain Suppression and Barrier are very good at reducing enemy damage, which comes in handy for keeping teams alive.
Holy Paladins: Holy Paladins are one of the most durable healers and offer lots of utility in team fights. Aside from having damage mitigation through Hand of Sacrifice, Holy Paladins literally prevent their team mates from dying with the new ability Saved by the Light. Hand of Freedom is still a very strong ability for keeping team mates mobile and can now reduce the duration of enemy crowd controls on the target when glyphed.
Mistweaver Monks: MW Monks have one of the best defensive cool downs in game. Life Cocoon not only absorbs incoming damage, but also increases the healing of healing over time effects by 50% on the target. Aside from that, they have lots of mobility with Tiger’s Lust and good crowd control with Paralysis, making them great offensive healers.
WILD CARDS
The following classes are not excelling in RBGs, but are still pretty good for most RBG compositions:
Frost Mages: Frost Mages are no longer the burst damage gods they were in MoP. Nonetheless, they still provide lots of control over the enemy team in the form of Polymorphand Frost Nova. Moreover, Frost Mages are still one of the best classes for defending bases, having a pet to interrupt node captures and two ways to break out of enemy CC with Ice Block.
Affliction Warlocks: For the most part, Warlocks are being out shined by Balance Druids in RBG’s. Despite this, their spread damage is still very strong. Unstable Affliction is a nuisance to enemy healers and Dark Soul is still a very powerful ability for establishing rot damage on the enemy team.
Restoration Druids: Druid AoE healing is very strong for countering the damage of enemy Balance Druids. Glyph of Wild Growth paired with Soul of the Forest is a cost effective way in dealing with enemy damage over time. The only drawback to Resto Druids at the moment is their lack of survival cool downs. Without Barkskin, Resto Druids are a sitting duck and are very vulnerable to getting trained.
THE BEST COMPOSITION:
In conclusion, it is my belief that the best RBG team composition consists of;
3x Balance Druid
1-2x Frost DK
1-2x Rogue
1x Guardian Druid (with Balance offspec preferred)
1x Disc Priest
1x Holy Paladin
1x Mistweaver Monk -
